Mike Funk first joined the firm of Steptoe & Johnson in 1992. His concentration has been in the areas of commercial transactions, commercial lending, real estate, corporate law, and estate planning. Mr. Funk is licensed to practice law in West Virginia and Illinois.

Commercial Lending
Mr. Funk assists lenders and borrowers in structuring, documenting, and closing commercial loans secured by real estate and various types of personal property.
Real Estate
Mr. Funk assists sellers, buyers, and lenders in commercial and residential real estate transactions.
Business Organizations
Mr. Funk has incorporated, organized, merged, and dissolved numerous business organizations including commercial and non-profit corporations and limited liability companies.
Estate Planning and Administration
Mr. Funk has experience in estate planning, including the drafting of wills and trusts. Additionally, he has prepared advance directives such as living wills and medical powers of attorney. Mr. Funk has also represented various fiduciaries in estate and trust administration matters.
PROFESSIONAL AND CIVIC ASSOCIATIONS
Mr. Funk practiced in Steptoe & Johnson’s Charleston office from 1992 until late 1999. From 1999 until mid-2006, he served as general counsel to Pratt & Whitney Engine Services, Inc. Since returning to Steptoe & Johnson in 2006, Mr. Funk has conducted his practice from the firm’s Martinsburg office.
Within the community, Mr. Funk served as a director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern West Virginia, and as its Secretary, Vice President, and acting President. Mr. Funk also served as legal advisor to the Sheriff's Youth Foundation of Kanawha County, and to the bylaws committee of the Business and Industrial Development Corporation of Kanawha Valley.
EDUCATION AND PRIOR EXPERIENCE
Mr. Funk received his legal education at the College of William and Mary where he was a member of the ABA's Administrative Law Review and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. He received a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Furniture Design. At Southern Illinois University, Mr. Funk received his undergraduate degree in Product Design, graduating with highest honors, and received the Academic Excellence Award.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. Funk was employed as a designer by several businesses and did freelance design.
