Norman Lindell was born in Brooklyn, New York. During his early youth, his family relocated to Bergenfield, New Jersey. He graduated from Bergenfield High School and was drafted into the United States Army.
Upon discharge from the service, Mr. Lindell attended the University of Charleston receiving a Bachelor's Degree in History. While attending the University of Charleston, Mr. Lindell was a member of Pi Gamma Mu, the National Social Science Honorary Society, Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honorary Society and Who's Who of Colleges and Universities. He received a number of awards including the University of Charleston Key Award for outstanding Academic Achievement and the Frank Young Award for most outstanding student in History and Political Science. Mr. Lindell also served as President of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Mr. Lindell received his Master's Degree in Human Resources Management from the University of Charleston in 1989.
Mr. Lindell joined the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson as a Human Resources Consultant on May 1, 2002, following nearly twenty-five years of service with the West Virginia Human Rights Commission.
Mr. Lindell was hired as an investigator with the West Virginia Human Rights Commission in January of 1978. He was promoted to Compliance Director in September, 1983 and promoted to Deputy Director in 1989. He served as Acting Director on three occasions, the last being from May 1,1998 until June 1,1999.
During his tenure, Mr. Lindell was awarded numerous commendations for his work. He also received commendations from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Kanawha Valley Board of Realtors and the City of Charleston, and he was awarded the 1999 Advocacy Award by the National Association of Human Rights Workers.
Mr. Lindell formerly served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Human Rights Workers, and formerly served as Vice-President of the West Virginia Chapter of the Association. He is a member of the Charleston Chapter of the Society of Human Resources Management, and serves as its Legislative Coordinator. Mr. Lindell is a member of the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries of the Kanawha Valley. He is the current Chairman of the Board. Mr. Lindell is a member of the Gateways Steering Committee which is responsible for improving employment opportunities for disabled West Virginians. He is also the Chairman of the Educating and Engaging Employers subcommittee.
Mr. Lindell has served on the West Virginia Disabilities Planning Council, the West Virginia Structural Barriers Compliance Board and the Governor's Committee on Criminal Justice. He is a member of the West Virginia State Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, as well as a member of the West Virginia Hate Crimes Task Force and has served as an instructor at the West Virginia State Police Academy. In addition, Mr. Lindell has served as an instructor for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, the National Association of Human Rights Workers, the West Virginia Human Rights Commission, the West Virginia Disabilities Planning Council, the West Virginia Department of Education, the Regional Community Policing Institute and others.
Mr. Lindell's civic activities include serving as past President of the Charleston Community Housing Resource Board, coaching in both the South Charleston Youth Basketball League and Little League Baseball. Mr. Lindell has also served as an Umpire for South Charleston Little League Baseball, as well as a referee for the youth basketball league.
Mr. Lindell is married to Deborah Beattie Lindell, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is a Social Worker for the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Children With Special Needs, Division of Maternal and Child Needs. Mr. and Mrs. Lindell have two children.
