Teresa Helmick joined the firm in 2006 and practices in the Charleston office. Ms. Helmick concentrates her practice in the areas of commercial and mineral real estate, government affairs and election and campaign finance.

AREAS OF CONCENTRATION

Commercial Transaction
Ms. Helmick has represented businesses regarding a variety of commercial transactions including commercial financings, acquisitions of mineral interests and all aspects of commercial real estate transactions including acquisitions, leases, title certifications, condemnations, foreclosures and title insurance.

Government Affairs
Ms. Helmick has served in several positions in state government and has drafted legislation passed by the West Virginia legislature on various topics. She has also represented government agencies at the local, county and state level. She has represented clients on a variety of issues regarding lobbying and other activities of public officials pursuant to the West Virginia Ethics Act.

Election and Campaign Finance
Ms. Helmick has represented political action committees, trade associations, candidates and other clients on matters involving state and federal campaign finance laws, election recounts and contests and election law complaints.

PROFESSIONAL AND CIVIC ASSOCIATIONS

Ms. Helmick is a member of the West Virginia State Bar and the Kanawha County Bar Association. She is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.

Ms. Helmick served in several positions in state government, including positions with the Secretary of State, Bureau of Employment Programs, Department of Tax and Revenue and the Department of Transportation. While serving with the Secretary of State, she was instrumental in the implementation of the federal Help America Vote Act of 2002 in West Virginia, which mandated election reforms.

Ms. Helmick also serves as the Assistant Girl Scout Leader of Brownie Troop #4880.

EDUCATION

Ms. Helmick received her Juris Doctor in 1991 from West Virginia University. She also received her Bachelor of Science degree in Resource Management from West Virginia University.

PUBLICATIONS

Ms. Helmick has drafted legislation passed by the West Virginia Legislature on a variety of topics including election law, campaign finance and corporation law.
